What to see for free

Unlike some of the pricey museums in many European cities, Tenerife’s natural wonders are free to view. A quick stroll or bike ride will take you to the serene beaches, sand dunes and incredible rock formations that the volcanic Canary Islands are famous for. Enjoy hikes for all levels within the national parks, before heading back for some much-earned time on the beach.

Tip: if planning to relax by the beach or pool, BYO books and magazines as most available on the island are not in English.

Getting around

Perhaps what makes Tenerife particularly appealing for those on a budget is that locals are friendly and getting around is inexpensive. You can walk just about everywhere on the island, but renting a bike or catching the bus won’t break the bank either.

Cheap, cheaper and cheapest eats

In general, Tenerife is cheap by western standards, and most restaurants are very reasonably priced for food and drinks.

Cheaper than restaurants? You’ll find many food stands known as ‘guachinches’ offering generous portions of fresh, delicious, local food.

Even cheaper!?  Of course the cheapest option is to buy your own food. Luckily, Tenerife caters for that as well with designated picnic areas throughout the island that come equipped with BBQs, tables and toilets.

Tip: Take advantage of ‘Menu del Dia’ at restaurants. These daily set menus get you a 3-course meal, bread and a beer/wine for £5-8!

With friendly culture, amazing weather all year round and cheap, well everything, Tenerife is a backpackers dream. Put away the large city maps, take off a few work shifts and recharge your batteries for the next adventure in Tenerife.
