Self-accommodation, aka self-catering, is a growing form of holiday accommodation in which you rent a holiday home for the duration of your stay. Often, these properties include a private pool, private gym, seaside access and other luxurious aspects that, let’s face it, most of us can only dream of. If you are about to experience the thrill of a self-accommodation holiday, here are a few tips to bear in mind. These are designed with European properties in mind, but many of the tips can be implemented elsewhere.
Types of property
Two aspects make property luxurious. The first is its location, while the second is its level of décor and spec. Holiday homes are often villas, cottages, or period properties, and when making your booking look at the spec as well as the location, as it is equally important.
Inspect the property
When you arrive, take the time to walk around the property including its surrounding fence. You really want to note down any areas that might require further attention and to familiarize yourself with the layout. If you found any areas for concern, for example a damaged appliance or an exposed pipe in the garden, notify the property owner, as these are often quickly fixed.
Be vigilant near the pool
In warm countries, property owners without a pool will struggle to rent their property out, so most holiday homes will include a private pool. If your party includes kids, they must be supervised whenever in or near the pool. In addition, adults are not immune to the danger of drowning. So while supervision by another adult maybe excessive, at least notify another adult of your plans.
Car hire
Properties are often located in areas that include limited or no public transport, so car hire becomes a popular choice. You can arrange such a service before arriving so you can use the car to transfer from the airport to the property (remember, self-accommodation holiday means you are in charge of your transport as well!) or at the destination. Be sure to bring a valid driver’s license and credit card.
Sunbath safely
People often think that getting sunburn on the first few days of their holiday is normal, well it isn’t. Often, it happens because the body does not get a chance to adjust. You should give your body time to get used to the sun and start producing more melanin, a natural skin protecting pigment. Children must be kept in the shade when possible and wear a high factor sun cream.
Bring an adapter
Your latest electronics or even the game console you carried all the way to entertain the kids won’t work without power. A few cheap power adapters are really all you need, however these are also easily forgotten!
