If you’re heading to Colorado for your next vacation, skiing might be one of the first things that come to mind. But there are activities to enjoy in Colorado all year-long. Regardless of the season, there are lots of things to do in Colorado. Here are just a few things to enjoy beyond heading down the mountain slopes.
Explore the Mile High City
As the largest city and the capital of Colorado, Denver is a great place to spend a getaway. There are many educational stops that can be made in the city including the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, where you can explore the planetarium, watch an IMAX movie, or head to the Discovery Zone. Other area attractions include the Denver Art Museum, Denver Zoo, Downtown Aquarium and Denver Botanic Gardens.
Take a Tour
While in the city, consider taking a tour to learn more about Denver. There are tours for every interest, including bike tours, microbrew tours, and culinary tours. For a fun escapade, consider Urban Adventure Quest, which turns the city into a game board where you’re led from one location to the next with clues and challenges.
Attend a Home Game
Sports fans won’t want to miss heading to a game. If you’re lucky enough to be in Denver for a Broncos home game, get Denver Broncos tickets and head to Sports Authority Field at Mile High. If baseball is more your thing, head to Coors Field for a Colorado Rockies game. Sports are an integral part of Colorado culture, so there’s no better way to take in the Colorado experience.
Head Down the River
Looking for adventure? Whitewater river rafting is one of the greatest adventures in nature. Colorado is known for its rafting from May to September, though you’ll find the swiftest currents and highest grades of difficulty in May and June. Areas for whitewater river rafting are located across the state including in Buena Vista, Salida, Winter Park, Durango, and Fort Collins.
Relax in Hot Springs
If you’ve never soaked in a natural hot spring, take the opportunity at one of the many hot springs in Colorado. Strawberry Park is located in Steamboat Springs and features large pools with sandy bottoms. Mount Princeton Hot Springs is known for being very family friendly. Hot Sulfur Springs has a cooler pool for kids with a slide, four hot pools for everyone to enjoy, and many more for adults only. Other hot spring locations include Glenwood Hot Springs and Pagosa Springs.
Hike a Fourteener
Consider hiking a fourteener, or a mountain that is 14,000 feet, on your escape to Colorado. Within the state limits, there are 54 fourteeners to choose from. One of the easiest by far is Mount Bierstadt, which includes a wide trail that is easily walked by hikers of all ages. Mt. Elbert Trail is fourteener that takes you to an elevation of 14,440. It’s 8.7 miles long and will likely take you the whole day, but is family friendly and dog friendly.
With so many things to do in the state of Colorado, there is no need to rely on skiing for an adventure. Check out one of these great ideas when planning your next getaway to Colorado.
